As Twitter expands as a business, its potential in the classroom here at Salisbury University is also expanding.
Twitter is one of the largest social networks in the world. Its fast paced data sharing is instantaneous and it seemingly has no limits. When Twitter became public on Nov. 7 it took a step in the company’s future expansion, an expansion that has been in the making for years now as people continue to use the social media application for nearly every reason imaginable.
With Twitter, businesses have the ability to communicate in a way they never have been able to before. Corporations, partnerships and other companies have started using Twitter to get information and communicate with consumers.
Companies can use this information to analyze market opportunities, and colleges like Salisbury University could be that upcoming opportunity as Twitter attempts to cater to students on social media platforms in order to create a more positive learning experience at SU.
Leonard Arvi of the Economics and Finance Department at SU says students feel comfortable on twitter and it makes sense for people to reach out to consumers on social media where they feel relaxed to get information, even if it consists of simply just reading through their “mentions” on Twitter.
“When you use a hash tag you can actually narrow very specifically to which company it is and what product you’re talking about,” said Arvi. “Even relevant to schools too, if students aren’t happy with a particular policy at SU, they can tweet about it.”
Twitter’s 232 million users all use the website for free, and while they post their tweets online, Twitter gathers every tweet and can sell the information users give back about products, goods or services, even if they don’t directly tweet at the company’s profile. This kind of process is more than just searching through a company’s hash tag.
